FOR THE LOVE OF MOLE, Mexico–Germany, 17’28” (2016)
For the Love of Mole is a short film that documents the process of making Oaxacan black mole (a traditional Mexican dish consisting of a thick sauce made from a variety of ingredients including chilies, tomatoes, spices, grains, and seeds), and invites the audience into Doña Yola’s kitchen to experience all the hard work, love, and meanings that accompany this dish.
In doing so, the film uses food as a vehicle to examine broad and diverse issues of theory and research methods within the field of visual anthropology. The short film was presented at the Nordic Anthropological Film Association (NAFA) Film Festival (2017), which took place in Aarhus, Denmark.
PARA LOS QUE SE FUERON, New York, 14’52” (2012)
Celebrating life with devotion has always been an intrinsic aspect of Mexican culture. In New York, I found myself surrounded by a joyful and hardworking community who were celebrating one of Mexico’s most beautiful and spiritual traditions: the Day of the Dead.
By immersing the viewer in the experience of this celebration, this documentary introduces us to families and individuals from the Mexican community who open the doors of their homes and their hearts to us. Through this celebration of life and unbreakable family bonds, they teach us about life, death, family, and their struggles.
